Born into a prominent Brahmin family in Salem in 1874, Sri B.V. Narasimhaswamiji (Swamiji) had a distinguished legal and political career. He was a renowned lawyer, a follower of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and a member of the Legislative Council. His passion for public service and India’s freedom movement led him to advocate for Home Rule in England.
Tragedy struck Swamiji’s life in 1920 with the accidental drowning of his two young sons. This devastating event led him to renounce his worldly pursuits and embark on a spiritual quest for truth and enlightenment. He spent years in Tiruvannamalai, studying Vedanta and writing the acclaimed biography of Ramana Maharishi, “Self Realization.”
Swamiji’s spiritual journey continued as he sought a Guru who resonated with his devotion (Bhakti marga). He found solace and guidance in the teachings of Upasani Baba, who introduced him to the profound legacy of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba. Deeply moved by Sai Baba’s message of love, compassion, and selfless service, Swamiji dedicated the rest of his life to propagating the Sai faith and establishing the All India Sai Samaj.
In 1941, Swamiji established the All India Sai Samaj in Chennai, initially operating from a small rented room. The Samaj’s influence grew rapidly, leading to the formation of numerous Sai Samajams across India. Swamiji’s unwavering dedication to Sai Baba led him to compile the Sai Sahasranama Stotra and Namavali, organize sadhana classes, and author “The Life of Sai Baba,” a comprehensive and cherished work on Sai Baba’s life and teachings.
Throughout his life, Swamiji embodied the qualities of universal love, kindness, and tolerance. A scholar with a deep knowledge of Sanskrit and a love for books, he was admired for his eloquence and his ability to bridge spiritual wisdom with everyday life. His contributions to the Sai movement are immeasurable, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of devotees.
